Germany Trip (the end)

All through this trip I noticed, more then ever, the differences between my life in the states and good 'ol Germany also affectionately called "the motherland" So here is a compilation of my observations.

You know you're in Germany when,...

... it's morning when all you want to do is count the stars or go to sleep (8 hours time difference, gotta love it!)

... when you're brother is sporting the minivan by driving 105 miles per hour on the "Autobahn" and a green/white police car leisurely drives by with 115 mph (both legal)

... when it's 40 °F, drizzly and overcast but the weather report says it is an uncommonly pleasant day considering the season! (Fall) (brrrrrr)

.... when all of nature (and I mean ALL) is dipped in colors of green, orange, brown, red.

.... it's september and the stores sell Cookies, Lebkuchen and all sorts of Christmas goodies

... no matter what direction you go, you will find a castle, ruin or monument within 10 to 15 min.

... you can pick your own bouquet of gorgeous flowers from the field and pay 3 Euro for about 15 stems. (it's a common curtesy to bring a little treat or flowers or something when you go visit someone, with these prices that makes sense)

... Gasoline costs approx. €1.50 a liter (approx. $1.65 a quart) and about 80% of that comes from taxes

... Mc. Donald sells Bratwurst instead of Breakfast saussages

... people stare at you when you walk around with more then 2 kids (it's kind of funny when you know people are trying to do the math watching you with 3 girls and guessing your age, thinking you're the mom...)

... when the radio plays American hit's only to be interrupted by a man telling you about "Stau's" (Traffic jams) in a thick Bavarian accent

... Public transportation is convenient and available in the dinkiest towns (love the U-Bahn)

... SOCCER is the nation's sport, on game nights the cities get crowded, you feel loopy by the beer fumes in the air and you get hit on by some drunk fan while shopping :) (happened many a times)

... you recycle everything and you pay 25 cents on every bottle you buy, which will be refunded when you return the empty canisters

... smoking and drinking is allowed at age 16 but you can't drive until you're 18

ok, I could go on and on... Germany is a great place!

You know you're at the Dautel home when....

... you are awakened early in the morning by 2 ecstatic nieces jumping on the couch on which you have been blissfully trying to overcome jet lag, they grab your face, ask if you're awake followed by an overflow of questions that spill out of their mouths so quickly you can't answer them...

.... everybody DREADS the mentioning of whinnie the poo, because it's the girls favorite movie and the've watched it a gazillion times (and Aunt Rike enjoys brining it up maliciously--retaliation for extensive teasing)

... there are 4 guitars in the house, one drum set, and one piano and still somehow there are discussions about who can use which, when

... One person starts singing a song while playing the piano and all of the sudden the whole family will gather around and join singing

... 3 nieces start a dance party as soon as you turn on Dad's Elvis collection! Favorite nr. 1. Return to sender, 2. Can't help falling in love 3. Teddy Bear... Alicia also LOVES "Breaking up is hard to do" by the Carpenters... there is nothing cuter than watching her sit in a corner, singing to her doll (named Rike) "Down, dubby do down down.. breaking up is hard to do"

... one person has a question and a intense family talk will unfold and last for easily 3-4 hours.

... every meal is an extensive master piece and delicious!

... everything you try to do for someone else is a surprise (we all Love to try and surprise)

... there is only one bath room and everybody tries to be first because after 20 min. there won't be any hot water left for the shower

... Christmas plans start in October additionally to Thanksgiving and everyone loves the preparations. Christmas is the most magical experience in my home and in Nürnberg with the Christkindles Market as well. It will be weird experiencing my first Christmas away from home and immediate family.

... when you play x-box, wii or card games (mostly 500 or scum) until the wee hours of the morning, realizing that your basically just a victim not competition for your brothers but too competitive to give up.

... you go to church and immediately are asked to conduct the music, translate for investigators, play the piano, help out in primary and afterward the first question you get asked by all your friends is "So who are you dating?" After disappointing them with the lack of stories to tell, they tried to convince me to move back, going through all sorts of measures setting me up with everyone male and available...oh well "For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors" (name that movie/book)

... breakfast cereal, bread spreads, gravy, snacks, dessert all include chocolate

... you are loved by everyone unconditionally and you are supported by any means you can possibly think of!!! I love my home and my family and all my loved ones in Germany!

My brother Richy brought these "Schokoküsse" (Chocolate kisses) and we were having a eating contest. I lost, but I think it was rigged!!!
I made this 3 layer birthday cake for my Mom's surprise party.
We prepared for a halloween party that they were having a day after I left for Utah (wait a minute... Halloween party? Maybe they were actually partying 'cause they finally had the house to themselves again)
(For more pictures, I have to wait for Kristin. I don't have any more worth showing, sorry!)

Da dada DAA!!!

Well, let me tell you how we surprised my parents.
We had someone in the stake presidency call my parents in for an "interview". They were so nervous about a calling, it was classic! Worried with all of this and sickness which my Mom was experiencing, they didn't expect a thing. Unfortunately my connecting flight from Denver got canceled.  Which meant I had to call home as Jared and Kristin were already on their way to Munich to pick me up from the airport. I had to come up with a slight "Family emergency" from Kristin's Family to cover my call. My parents were not happy with me at all when I told them I couldn't tell them what was going on but had to get a hold of Jared. Anyway, long story short, my flight got worked out and 36 hours after I got up, to go to the airport in Salt Lake, I met them in Nürnberg. Needless to say, I was all puckered out! In between me arriving and meeting my parents, we killed time by visiting some great friends that live by the church and by checking out "Dirndl", sold as remnants of the October Fest. (Pics at the end). I was exhausted when it finally was time to meet them. Stationed behind the door of the stake presidents office I was waiting for them to make it up the stairs, frantically trying not to fall asleep.  I succeeded and the rest is history. My Dad was speech less (a hard thing to accomplish! :). It was so funny, he just turned around and wouldn't even say anything....

--argh, my computer doesn't like me! I can't upload the video.Well, they were excited to see me. let's leave it at that.

This is HUGE!!! Mc Donalds is selling 'Nürnberger' (our local Bratwurst') German wide now... Well, I was pretty excited to eat it for breakfast anyhow!
A little too 'Little Red Riding Hood' perhaps?
How about 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'?

We all got Daddy's nose!

Alright, Kristin's not home so I have to ask for your patience concerning the video of my parents reaction to my surprise visit. She videoed it for us on her camera. Here are some perky treats I had since coming home. My family is simply AWESOME, if I may say so myself! They are wonderful and I've missed them so much.

Karen gave me these to bring to Jared and Kristin for Halloween. Join us in some of the craziness!

We've been told we look alike. I resent that observation! No idea what people are talking about :)

Bucket List

A few days ago, I was out with Mandi, Ben, Meagen and Mel. We went to a movie at Gateway Mall .While we were waiting for the movie to start we were talking about our "bucket list" or things we want to do in life before we die... I always wanted to make such a list, but was afraid of getting  too carried away or to get frustrated if I never accomplish everything on it. Now I think its good to have realistic goals but also to have dreams, so I decided to give it some more thought. Obviously some of these are just dreams and if I never get a chance to fulfill them, it will be just fine too, but just maybe I will have the chance to turn them into reality someday! I'm determined to live by 'Come what may and love it' (Elder Wirthlin's Mom) and just to find 'Joy in the journey' (Pres. Monson). So I'll go step by step. I'm sure the list will change over the years and I probably will experience even better things that I couldn't have dreamed up! That makes me excited! "Men are that they might have joy! (2nd Nephi 2:25) so if the Scriptures say it, it must be true! Oh and one of my absolute favorite quotes to back it up is 'In all of living have much fun and laughter! Life is to be enjoyed not just endured!'  (Pres. Hinckley)

This is what Elder Holland said in is talk "The best is yet to be" (January 2010 Ensign p. 27)
"Keep your eyes on your dreams, however distant and far away. Live to see the miracles of repentance and forgiveness, of trust and divine love that will transform your life today, tomorrow and forever. That is a new year's resolution I ask you to keep"
I learned so much from that talk and hopefully I can incorporate all of the things he taught. Anyway, here is the list! I decided to put it in 3 groups (Character Developement, Talents and Experience)

Experiences:
  • Travel to 1.Hawaii 2.Prince Edward Island 3. New Zealand 4. England (outside of London, I've already seen that and it was great but I want to experience the Victorian parts more) 5. Greece (In that priority, but I LOVE to travel anywhere)
  • Go to every temple in the United States ( I started small by trying to go to every temple in Utah)
  • Do a humanitarian project in a 3rd world country (my favorite would be to work with OSSO in Ecuador, working in an orphanage for 3 months)
  • Sing in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir
  • Be in a good choir that performs 'The Messiah' by Händel
  • Go on a pioneer trek
  • Go to a formal dance with someone I like a lot (no snickering at this one! We didn't have dances in Germany where it would be worth it to me to buy a fancy dress and here, well I don't want to go unless I can go with someone where I feel completely comfortable. I'm not sure how people dance here....)
  • See Les Miserable and Phantom of the Opera performed live
  • Rock Climbing (on a more advanced level than I already have)
  • Go to a Jazz Game and a NBL Game
Talents/Education:
  • Learn Spanish fluently
  • Run in a charity race (first I have to built up endurance and stamina which is super hard for me, maybe because I'm anemic, but I'm working on it)
  • Read all of Shakespeare's works (I read Romeo and Juliet, Othello, The Tempest, Macbeth, Much ado about nothing, The Taming of the Shrew and am currently working on the Merchant of Venice and King Lear)
  • Graduate from college in addition to my German Vocational Degree
  • Take singing, piano, horse back riding, oil painting, flower arranging, violin, ballroom dancing lessons
  • Become an expert on ww2 history
  • Learn how to survive with only natural resources, learn more homeopathic home remedies that work effectively and also learn how to fix things around the house, car, ....
Character Development:
  • Be one of those people that emanate the light of Christ and automatically make everyone around them feel loved (I only met a few that impersonate that ideal completely but I want to become like them!
  • Get married in the temple and become the kind of person that I am looking for in a husband
  • Obviously, to return to Heavenly Father with my family and become like Him
  • Be scripture literate and know where to find references to teach better
  • Be the kindest person possible, be more humble and less judgmental
  • Be the best Mom and wife, once I am married and have kids (I want quite a few kids, this will be fun)
  • Develop a good sense of humor and be able to be naturally funny
Alright. So here it is! It helps to formulate the goals and dreams. That way I can go back and evaluate life better and make plans on how to accomplish the realistic dreams. Isn't life amazing to offer so many opportunities? If I think on earlier times, people were a lot more limited. What a blessing! At the same time it is also harder for we have to be careful to focus on the important things. It's tricky not to get carried away and waste time and energy on things that aren't consequential. I'd love to do all of the good things in life, but at the same time I want to set priorities well. Well, ok. Enough for today!
